They were invented to aid people who have lost limbs due to automobile accidents, military combat, illnesses or birth defects. Artificial limbs were designed to replace missing body parts or to help body parts function more effectively. They help people live a normal and active lifestyle. Because of artificial limbs people are able to do sports and compete in many marathons and track events that they weren’t allowed to when they did not have artificial limbs. Artificial limbs have improved in a great manner due to the technology, material and design that we have now. Before the invention of artificial limbs people would use “peg legs,” which were made out of wooden chairs or table legs. They would also use peg legs because they couldn’t afford anything better.
