Prosthetics?

This is a short video explaining the advancement of limbs, how they were developed in the early days and came to be the quality they are now.

Although artificial limbs are highly beneficial, they also have a numerous amount of issues. For example, figuring out a way to make the body accept the new limbs and not have the immune system see it as something foreign. Another major issue is finding a solution to a broken or dis-functioned limb that cannot be replaced due to a traumatic injury where the limb attached to the body begins to fail. The world of artificial limbs has increasingly improved over the past 2,000 years of practice. As technology has advanced humans have gone from missing a limb to being capable of controlling a bionic arm using neural prosthetic limbs. Which is only one of many amazing advances we have made through time. With artificial limbs scientists hope to accomplish saving the lives of many who have been taken away the opportunity to live a normal life and hope to avoid any future complications.

Each and every prosthetic is first custom fitted and then built. Because every patient is different, the prosthetic limb must fit that patient’s body. This process consists of several different steps which begins with a measurement process that is later used to design the prosthetic limb. This measurement process is highly important because it is what determines the correct size of the prosthetic limb to avoid later complications. Depending on the specific artificial limb being made, a wide variety of materials are used to create the final limb, such as acrylic resin, carbon fiber, thermoplastics, silicone and titanium. To make the artificial limb more life-like, a foam cover can be applied and shaped to match the real limb. In addition, a flexible skin-like covering may be added for  a more life-like appearance but this additional feature is not considered a necessity and therefore the patient will have to cover the expenses of a life-like limb.

This scene is from The Real Housewives of New York City where she can be seen throwing an artificial limb, a leg to be exact.
